When he became Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan introduced two new ‘affordable’ housing types adding to the glut of new ‘affordable’ tenures; the London Affordable Rent and the London Living Rent, both described as ‘genuinely affordable’. The London Affordable Rent is often referred to as social rent or very similar to social rent, but the 2018/19 benchmark London Affordable Rent for just a bedsit (£150) was £44/week higher than the average London council rent (£106 a week), covering all sizes of property.

This is an updated version of our 2019 Guide, containing the latest available figures about the London Affordable Rent.
