Alana, Chair of the Tenants and Residents Association for the Gascoyne Estate in Hackney, describes the moment she found out she was paying over £300 per month more than her neighbours in rent for the same size and type of flat on the same estate, with the same landlord.
She describes the hoops she had to jump through to get an explanation from her landlord for this discrepancy: housing associations converting a proportion of re-let properties from social to ‘affordable’ rent.
The problem, of course, is that this ‘affordable rent’ is not affordable for her. Were she to return to work on her previous salary, with her son now at school, she would not be able to cover the cost of living for her young family after paying her rent.
