Following the Grenfell Tower fire, the UK government commissioned the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, led by Dame Judith Hackitt. The Hackitt Review made 53 recommendations and proposed a number of new regulatory structures to strengthen regulation and oversight of building safety.

On 6 June 2019, the government launched an 9-week consultation on its 192-page proposal document, Building a Safer Future: Proposals for Reform of the Building Safety Regulatory System. This briefing paper summarises the main proposals in this consultation.

This briefing paper was drawn up by Dr Stuart Hodkinson at University of Leeds and Phil Murphy, Manchester Sustainable Communities, for our event on 19th July 2019 to discuss the government’s proposed reforms to the regulation of high rise residential dwellings.
