London Tenants Federation sent a written response to the GLA’s 19th Annual Monitoring Report of the Mayor’s London Plan.
It is estimated that 66,000 additional homes, a year, are required net (after homes sold or demolished) in order to meet the demand for homes in London by 2029. Currently the number of homes being built annually is a little over half of what is required.
Our key point is that London Tenants Federation is, particularly concerned about the delivery of affordable homes, especially social rented homes. From the point of view of rent payable and security of tenure, social rented housing is the only kind that meets the needs of the thousands in London on council waiting lists, in temporary accommodation, obliged to stay in the private rented sector for lack of alternative, or forced out of London.
As a result London Tenants Federation asks the Mayor and GLA to:
1) to seek every means at their disposal to increase the number and proportion of social rented homes delivered;
2) to strongly press the newly elected government to release the funding necessary to greatly increase the supply of social rented homes.
